This project promotes energy conservation and sustainable behavioural change through the deployment of behavioural “Green nudges” rooted in community participation and local practice. It reduces electricity consumption and builds energy management skills and awareness about sustainable energy use.
Progress
- Forming volunteer teams from the residents for local ownership and sustainability
- Community workshops, meetings and door-to-door communication for awareness for over 1000 people
- Implementation of nudges, including energy audits, energy-saving competition, default thermostat settings and prompts; and making energy-usage information visible.
- Outreach to schools for education and a tree plantation drive in response to the recent floods
Highlights
Women are in the house more and make decisions, so we needed to adapt to make it simple and accessible to engage them within the cultural context. We also worked with children, starting with fun activities in school, and then they engaged their parents.
The participatory approach to designing nudges, along with continuous community feedback, has helped to tailor strategies that resonate with residents’ daily routines and social norms.
“The key was leveraging local social norms and community leadership.”
