This project builds the resilience of coastal communities in Timbulsloko, Demak - ’the sinking village’ - against the growing threats of tidal flooding and sea-level rise. It supports the co-production of local climate risk data and adaptive, sustainable livelihood strategies.
Progress
- Community engagement and cross-sector dialogue
- Climate risk assessments focus groups with 78 people
- Identified new ideas for community-based adaptation, including improved waste management and climate-adaptive aquaculture systems.
Highlights
Local residents, particularly women and marginalized groups are gaining climate literacy and advancing their own nature-based solutions.
Timbulsloko retains a strong sense of community cohesion grounded in local traditions of mutual aid (Gotong Royong) and collective decision-making. This social capital has enabled residents to cope with recurring floods despite limited external assistance.
“There have been lots of scientific and business interventions, but they are not sustainable. They don’t involve the people. We are learning how to connect and collaborate.”
“We met the youth there. They have hope and spirit and they want to make things better. Every time the waters rise, it’s the youth who repair.”
