This project streamlines the monetisation of environmental commodities such as Carbon Credits and Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) from solar mini-grids through an innovative digital MRV (monitoring, reporting, and verification) platform to provide sustainable financing for solar energy projects.

Progress

  • Development of 3D printed and virtual hardware for solar development
  • Became a member of Renewable Energy Association of Nigeria (REAN)
  • Installation of pilot solar mini-grids
  • Software development of ecoWise web architecture ready for first 500 solar projects
  • Project partnerships agreed, including a solar developer

Highlights

Villages are not served with power but they provide for country, for example, they need light for farming, mining and fishing. Now the mini-grid is providing power as well as extra revenue through carbon credits. It is reducing energy costs and supporting a move away from aid.

“Collaboration is key. When developing climate solutions it’s got to be developed with the people – they are not beneficiaries, they are the most important stakeholders. It’s got to be co-produced. For us, its solar developers and small, remote communities.”
