Application round for 2018/19 has now closed

The deadline for submitting applications for an assistantship in 2018/19 has now passed.  We thank you for your interest in the programme.  All submitted applications will be assessed in due course.  For more information on what happens next with your application over the coming months, please refer to our English Language Assistants Lifecycle.

Potential earlier deadline for university students

If you are currently a university student and wish to apply to be a language assistant as part of your year abroad, your university may set a separate internal deadline. The deadline may be considerably earlier than the British Council deadline. Please check this with your university before applying and leave enough time to complete your application.

For graduate applicants

If you graduated before 1 January 2017 will need to provide an up-to-date reference from a recent employer as part of their application.

When to contact your referee

After completing your application, you will need to provide the email address of one of your tutors (or a year abroad co-ordinator) to act as a referee.

It is your responsibility to check that your referee's details are correct and that they will be happy to provide you with a reference before the deadline.

You will not be able to change your referee’s details once you have submitted your application.
