This research maps creative technology hubs in Germany, focusing on hubs working with advanced screen-based technologies such as virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), and immersive media, and explores how these spaces engage migrant communities.

Why this matters

Germany’s creative technology sector is growing quickly, supported by public funding, infrastructure investment, and rising demand for immersive digital content. Creative hubs are vital in supporting innovation, public access, and skills development, while also acting as meeting points for diverse communities. Understanding how these hubs involve migrants is important for creating more inclusive and internationally connected creative economies.

What the research covers

This research identifies and categorises creative technology hubs across Germany. It maps their geographical spread, themes, and public offer, and looks at how hubs are supporting migrant practitioners. The report also compares Germany’s hub landscape with that of the UK, reflecting on similarities, differences, and shared challenges.

Key findings

  • 64 creative tech hubs were identified, mostly in Berlin, Baden-Württemberg, and Nordrhein-Westfalen.Ten types of hubs emerged, reflecting the sector’s range — from co-working spaces and cultural organisations to universities and innovation labs.
  • While most German hubs are education- and research-led, the UK has more hubs bridging industry, community, and research.
  • Several hubs reported high levels of participation from migrant and international creatives, especially in Berlin.
  • Many migrants face challenges accessing funding, networks, and production spaces, highlighting the need for more inclusive policies and support structures. Key barriers include high costs, technical skill requirements, limited access to training, and a lack of awareness about how immersive technologies can be used for community benefit and professional development.
  • Hubs with a cultural or artistic focus were more likely to run inclusive community projects than those in the tech and business sectors.
