Career Essentials is Alumni UK’s global careers series for final-year students and early-career graduates of UK higher education.
Career Essentials is developed and delivered in partnership with GradLink, the free and award-winning careers site for international graduates, combining expert guidance with real-world insights from employers, universities and UK alumni around the world.
Through practical online sessions led by employers, careers experts and international alumni, the series provides insights and advice to help you navigate the global job market, make the most of your UK education and build your career with confidence.
Topics include building a professional profile, networking effectively, understanding what employers are looking for, adapting to the changing workplace and making the most of the skills and international experience gained through a UK education.
Career Essentials 2026
The 2026 programme brought together students and graduates from around the world with employers, careers professionals, UK universities and successful international alumni.
Across our 2026 careers webinar programme:
- 8,900 total registrations for the series.
- More than 4,000 new members joined Alumni UK through the series.
- 99% of participants who provided feedback felt better equipped for their professional life.
- 97% of participants who provided feedback rated the sessions positively.
- 28 speakers contributed across the careers webinar programme.
- Speakers represented global employers, leading UK universities, industry organisations and international alumni.
Contributors included representatives from Accenture, KPMG, Deloitte, GSK, LinkedIn, the University of Oxford, King’s College London and the University of Warwick, alongside other employers, careers experts and UK alumni.

Career Essentials will return
We are already planning the next edition of Career Essentials, with a new programme of practical sessions to help UK-educated students and graduates prepare for the global job market and navigate the early stages of their careers.
The programme is currently being developed, with feedback from UK universities helping to shape the final selection of topics. Areas being explored include:
- Succeeding in the global job market, from standing out in applications and interviews to understanding what employers really value.
- Building your professional profile and networks, including employer networking and creating a strong professional digital presence.
- Preparing for the transition from study to work, including gaining valuable work experience before and after graduation.
- Using AI in your career, from using AI effectively in your job search to developing relevant AI skills for graduates from non-technical subjects.
- Navigating a changing labour market, including emerging sectors and roles, career pivoting and building career agility.
- Making your international experience an asset and demonstrating the value of your cross-cultural experience to employers.

Your online presence plays a crucial role in career success. Employers increasingly search for candidates online and assess their digital footprint when making hiring decisions. This session provides practical tips for presenting yourself professionally online, enhancing your visibility, and making a strong impression with employers.
20 May - Build Your Employer Network
Research shows that the most important factor for career success lies in the contacts you have. This session offers four distinct strategies for building an extensive online network of influential professionals who can help you reach your career goals.
11 June- Thrive in the Transforming Workplace
The workplace will experience more change in the next five years than it has in the previous twenty. AI is a key driver, even for non-technical roles. Green skills are also in rising demand. This session explains what employers are looking for in the ever-changing workplace and how you can demonstrate your readiness and adaptability.
9 July - Thrive in Your Career from Day One
Starting your first job is exciting but can be a big adjustment. This session offers practical tips for succeeding from day one: how to learn effectively, tackle challenges with confidence, and deliver real value to your employer. Hear insights from recent graduates who have successfully transitioned from university to the workplace.
16 September - Utilise Your Cross-Cultural Experience
Your international experiences and exposure to diverse cultures are valuable assets in today’s global job market. This session shows you how to leverage cross-cultural skills to stand out to employers, adapt to different work environments, and enhance your career prospects.
