This project builds heat resilience among female gig and platform workers in India by identifying gender-specific challenges, engaging platform-based companies and policymakers, and developing targeted interventions to improve working conditions and health outcomes during extreme heat.

Progress

  • Development of training and materials for women gig and platform workers.
  • Interviews and collaboration with unions and leaders to identify gendered heat-related challenges and mobilise workers.
  • Piloted research instruments to refine language, flow and sensitivity considerations.

Highlights

We are moving towards developing a gender-sensitive framework on heat resilience and occupational health and safety. Trust-building with labour groups and community partners has ensured that the project reaches those most vulnerable and that workers’ voices shape what emerges.

We have learned that heat stress intersects strongly with gender, informality, and economic vulnerability, and that women workers often carry both workplace and domestic burdens without rest.

“Trust-building and cultural sensitivity are proving essential for honest dialogue.”
