Ahead of the upcoming elections in Indonesia in 2024 and during the year of Indonesia’s G20 presidency, Next Generation Indonesia explores the attitudes, aspirations and needs of young people aged 16-35 across Indonesia. The mixed-methods research looks at the values most important to young Indonesians today, the changes they want to see in their country and the role they want to take in affecting that change.
With 52% of Indonesia’s population of 270 million consisting of young people between ages 18 and 39 years old, spanning both Millennial and Gen Z generations, Indonesia’s youth will shape the nation’s future. Combined with Indonesia taking a more visible position on the world stage through it’s current G20 presidency and the upcoming elections in 2024, the British Council’s Next Generation Indonesia research comes at an optimal time to explore the aspirations and opinions of young Indonesians and support the role they can play in their own country and across the world.
Overall and based on the research findings, young people are optimistic about their personal futures but are experiencing a lack of momentum, with half of youth engaged expressing that life in Indonesia has not improved since their parents were the same age. The report concludes with a number of recommendations designed to amplify the voices of young Indonesians and support better youth policymaking.
