The Mauritian Creative Ecosystem research explores the strengths, gaps, and future potential of the country’s creative and cultural industries (CCIs).

As Mauritius seeks to diversify its economy, creativity and culture offer powerful tools for sustainable growth, job creation, and youth engagement. Despite the country's rich multicultural identity and vibrant artistic expressions, many creatives face systemic challenges that hinder the full development of the sector.

The research focuses on eight core sectors: visual arts, music, performing arts, crafts, literature, film, new media and fashion, drawing on national surveys, stakeholder interviews, and case studies. It highlights both urban and rural realities while aligning its findings with broader African and global trends in the creative economy.

Key findings include:

  • Diverse cultural landscape: The creative sector draws strength from a rich blend of African, Indian, European, and Asian influences.
  • Significant economic potential: CCIs contribute to cultural tourism, job creation, and export opportunities that support inclusive economic growth.
  • Challenges in infrastructure and policy: A lack of exhibition spaces, limited funding, and weak policy frameworks limit sector development.
  • Digital transformation: Creatives are using digital platforms to expand their reach and reimagine their practices.

The report provides evidence to guide policymakers, funders, and partners in supporting a more vibrant, inclusive, and globally connected creative economy in Mauritius.
