The programme with China enables current and future Chinese teachers to receive training and experience teaching Chinese in the UK. It is run in partnership with local education authorities, mainly those in Beijing, Shanghai, Chongqing and Guangzhou where we have our centres. The British Council in China does not accept applications from individuals, as the scheme is based on an agreement between the Chinese and UK Ministries of Education. Participants teach Mandarin for one academic year and/or promote Chinese culture in UK schools.
In order to be eligible to be a Chinese assistant in the UK, you must be:
- currently a qualified teacher teaching English in a school in China
- a graduate of a Teaching Mandarin as a Foreign Language course with at least one year’s experience of teaching overseas.
All applicants have to go through the official recruitment procedure in China and must get written approval from their provincial department of education in China or universities/colleges.
