Language assistant teaching girl in the UK.

Would you like the opportunity to spend a year living and working in the UK?

Do you want to help students improve their knowledge and understanding of your language and culture? By becoming a language assistant in a UK school, you can do just that.

What will I be doing?

Language assistants in UK schools come from 15 countries around the world and work in the classroom with teachers or on their own with small groups. They spend up to a year helping students improve their confidence with foreign languages and increase their cultural awareness.

You will get the chance to experience teaching in the UK, develop your English language skills and gain important, transferable skills to help you in your career, whatever industry you choose to work in.

You will also get the opportunity to live in the UK and visit England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Find out more about the benefits and role of being a language assistant in the UK.

Languages covered

The opportunity to become a language assistant is available to fluent speakers of the following languages:

  • French
  • German
  • Irish (for placements in Northern Ireland schools only)
  • Italian
  • Mandarin Chinese
  • Spanish

How do I apply?

To become a language assistant in French, German, Italian, Mandarin Chinese or Spanish in the UK, please apply to the relevant partner agency in your home country. You will find the contact details for these agencies below.

Every year, we also seek to recruit fluent speakers of Irish to promote and support the teaching and learning of the language in schools throughout Northern Ireland. For more information, please visit the Irish Language Assistants page or contact us.

If your home country is not listed, this means that you cannot become a language assistant in a UK school through the British Council at this time.

It is run in partnership with local education authorities, mainly those in Beijing, Shanghai, Chongqing and Guangzhou where we have our centres. The British Council in China does not accept applications from individuals, as the scheme is based on an agreement between the Chinese and UK Ministries of Education. Participants teach Mandarin for one academic year and/or promote Chinese culture in UK schools.
