English Impact assesses the English language capability of students from grade 10 studying at publicly funded Madrid schools.

The research compares outcomes from schools participating in the regions bilingual programme with non-bilingual schools, whilst analysing the relationship between English language learning motivation and improved ability.

In collaboration with Madrid’s Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport, and under advisement of sampling experts from the Australian Council for Research in Education, the British Council evaluated almost 1800 students across 170 schools over a two month period in 2017.

Reading, writing, listening and speaking skills were assessed as well as student’s being asked to report on their learning background and motivations for learning English.
