A large group of women stood on steps

Being selected as a British Council Women in STEM scholar is a mark of excellence. Scholars are chosen for their academic merit, leadership potential, and commitment to advancing STEM in their home countries.

With only a small number of scholarships awarded globally each year, this opportunity places successful applicants among a distinguished group of women making a difference in science and innovation.

If your application is successful, you’ll join a vibrant international network of almost 500 women from across the world - find out more about the benefits below.

Access to networking events and professional development sessions

You will have the opportunity to meet other scholars, network with and hear from STEM professionals, and meet the team who run the Women in STEM programme. The key events run by the British Council include:

  • Online welcome address – you will receive an official welcome from the British Council and get the opportunity to meet other women studying in the UK as part of the scholarship programme.
  • In-person networking event – you will receive an invite to a two-day networking event in a UK city or town, where you will be able to meet other Women in STEM scholars, hear from STEM professionals, and enjoy a series of sessions and activities. Previous events have taken place in Newcastle and Glasgow.

It is likely that your university will also organise events to ensure you have the best possible experience at the institution.

Peer-to-peer support and collaboration

As well as meeting other Women in STEM scholars at our online and in-person events, you can also connect with scholars past and present through our dedicated Women in STEM LinkedIn group. The group offers a great opportunity to support and inspire eachother.

"I have forged meaningful international friendships. These bonds are characterised by a shared commitment to promoting and supporting emerging female scientists. Together, we form a network that transcends borders, contributing to the global advancement of women in STEM." Luisana Barrios Renteria, Mexico, Economics and Environmental Management at the University of York

Opportunities to engage with leading researchers, industry experts, and alumni

Our events give you the opportunity to engage with researchers and industry experts through sessions which are tailored specifically to those taking part in the scholarship programme. You can also register for Alumni UK, the British Council’s global network for individuals who have studied in or with the UK. By registering, you’ll gain access to a vibrant online community where you can expand your network, participate in learning and development opportunities, and showcase your achievements.

Opportunities to inspire other women and girls

When you become a Women in STEM scholar, you also become an ambassador for the programme - somebody who will actively inspire women and girls in STEM and encourage others to apply for the scholarship programme. There are many ways that you can do this, from speaking at events in the UK and in your home country, to sharing your experience through a video or piece of writing.

In line with the programme’s objectives, scholars are also encouraged to continue their work as an ambassador and support other women and girls in STEM through activities when they return to their home country, through volunteering or mentoring, for example.

Have you done something amazing during or after the Women in STEM scholarship programme? We would love to hear about your achievements and career journey. Whether you've overcome challenges or reached significant milestones, your story can inspire others. Please email us via womeninstem.scholarships@britishcouncil.org and ask for a case study form.
