This study set out to find what a valid English writing task should look like for Japanese university entrance exams. Using surveys, interviews, and documents, we explored what really matters. The results? A strong writing test should ask students to complete direct writing tasks such as an impromptu opinion or informative piece, or a summary based on one or more texts.
