Aptis Remote on the day of your test

You might feel a bit nervous about your Aptis test. So that things go as smoothly as possible for you, we've put together some information to help you understand what to expect on the day of your test and things you must remember to do.

  • Choose a quiet private space with a comfortable desk, chair and appropriate lighting in the area.
  • Sit directly in front of your computer screen and ensure you are always clearly visible.
  • Turn off and put away your mobile phone.
  • Check your system setup, close all irrelevant tabs and windows on your computer that are not needed for the test.
  • You are not allowed to leave the room or take breaks during the test.
  • Make sure you are prepared and have had something to eat beforehand and have some water available during the test.
  • Remember at least three days before your test day you will need to complete the onboarding process, prepare and set up your test environment and computer.

Test duration

You should always allow 15 minutes before the test so that you can set up your test environment, complete the system checks, accept the exam guidelines, do a 360- degree room scan and complete your identity verification (face and ID scans). The total duration of the Aptis test depends on the components you are taking. The maximum allowed time for each component for Aptis General is:

Grammar and vocabulary: 25 minutes

Speaking 12 minutes

Writing: 50 minutes

Reading: 35 minutes

Listening: 40 minutes

The timings for some components may differ if you are taking other variants such as Aptis Advanced, Aptis for Teachers or Aptis for Teens. Please check the pages for each component for more information.

Checking your identification documents

Your identity will be checked as part of the pre-test checks and on the day of the test.  Please ensure you have a valid ID and use the same valid ID throughout your onboarding  and test day.

Valid forms of ID include passport, identity card and biometric residence permit only if a photo is included.  Your ID must contain your full name and a photo of yourself on the same side.

Invalid or expired IDs will not be accepted.  If you cannot provide a valid ID you will not be able to sit the test.

Completing a 360 degree room scan

A 360 degree room scan is required on the test day.  Follow the instructions on ProctorTrack to complete the scan.

You need to move your webcam or laptop slowly, and clearly capture the entirety of your desk area that covers the area above and under your desk or table, and the entire room.

Watch this video under Step 7 that shows you how to do this.

Your actions will be monitored and recorded by ProctorTrack. Any violations will be flagged, and this may result in the cancellation of your test or withholding your results.

Actions not allowed during your test

  • cheating of any kind
  • answering or checking your mobile phone during the test
  • allowing another person to enter your test environment
  • looking away from your computer screen and webcam for an extended period
  • recording and taking a screenshot of the test questions
  • copying and pasting or visiting another website during the test
  • having food, or personal items such as wallet, sunglasses and other items not necessary for testing.

At the end of your test

In order to complete your test successfully you need to make sure that you have submitted all test components and uploaded the video recording to ProctorTrack.

Your results

Your results will be available 48 hours after the test has been taken and successfully uploaded. They will be sent to you by your local British Council office.
