About

This new interactive data visualisation shows how the UK, as a provider and host of internationally mobile students, has evolved over recent years. The data stretches back as far as 1978, and from 2002 differences in gender, age, level and disciplines studied are displayed for incoming students.

The data has been sourced mainly from the Higher Education Statistics Authority and UNESCO Institute for Statistics – further details of the data definitions and sources can be found by clicking the ‘i’ icon in the top right of the data visualisation.

This page displays an image of the interactive. To be able to manipulate the interactive itself, please follow this link: http://mobility.britishcouncil.kiln.it/

This is intended only as a representation of the data and to show how international student mobility from a UK perspective is changing. For further information on the British Council’s work across international higher education, in-depth analysis and data please email ihe@britishcouncil.org.

Note: Once you have launched the data visualisation you can use the ‘cog’ icon to adjust the speed at which the display changes, to see more countries and to explore further back in time (as far as 1978).
