Stewart Cook, Assistant Headteacher tells us about the experience of his pupils on our British Council STEM and communications programme Learning Sectors, supported by Formula 1.
Our school, Frances Olive Anderson CE Primary School, joined the Learning Sectors: Formula 1 STEM Challenge through the British Council’s international partnerships programme, as we were eager to broaden our pupils’ global outlook while deepening their engagement with STEM. The opportunity to collaborate with an international partner school in India felt like a natural extension of our school’s vision to nurture curiosity, creativity, and connection beyond the classroom. We have been deeply involved in the British Council's previous programmes like Connecting Classrooms and were keen to become involved in a new project with a completely new country and area of the world.
We were particularly attracted to the idea of students applying STEM learning to a real-world context (Formula 1) for a real life audience, while also exploring cultural similarities and differences in how STEM is taught and valued globally.
Our initial hopes were to ignite enthusiasm for STEM, build cross-cultural understanding, and develop problem-solving and teamwork skills through a shared challenge that felt authentic and aspirational.
At the outset, both schools agreed on a shared vision: to use the STEM resources for collaborative innovation, mutual learning, and celebrating diversity in STEM education. We wanted pupils to recognise that science, technology, engineering, and mathematics transcend borders and are universal languages of progress and creativity.
Partnership Formation
The STEM-challenge topics were co-designed through joint online meetings between teachers in both schools, guided by the British Council framework. We selected a challenge related to inclusion and making our school as inclusive as possible, they set us an environmental challenge of creating clean water in their rivers.
We had to navigate several logistical and cultural considerations, including time zone differences, curriculum alignment, and communication styles. To manage this, we used shared digital platforms (eg Teams and Padlet) for asynchronous collaboration. We also ensured that our approach was inclusive, recognising differing access to technology and resources.
Language barriers were minimal, but we were sensitive to cultural nuances and learning contexts, taking care to celebrate each school’s unique identity while finding common ground through the STEM challenge.
Collaboration in Action
Through the challenge, we aimed to develop students’ STEM competencies such as critical thinking, design thinking, data analysis, and problem-solving. We also wanted to cultivate STEM mindsets, resilience, curiosity, teamwork and the ability to apply learning to real-world contexts.
Partnering with the school in India enhanced this by giving pupils a genuine audience and purpose for their work. They compared ideas, shared prototypes, and exchanged feedback, which fostered global collaboration and communication skills. All really important 21st global skills.
The Formula 1-inspired theme brought excitement and structure to the project. The idea of engineering for sustainability, and innovation gave the partnership a professional authenticity, helping pupils see themselves as young engineers tackling meaningful global challenges.
Impact and Outcomes
The partnership has had a significant impact on our pupils. Engagement with STEM has visibly increased, children have shown greater motivation, confidence, and curiosity, asking deeper questions about how science and engineering shape the world. They have also developed a more sophisticated understanding of real-world problem-solving, particularly in relation to sustainability and design innovation.
Working with the Indian school has also transformed our approach to STEM education. It reinforced the importance of collaboration, global perspective, and applied learning. .
For me personally, the partnership has been professionally enriching. It has expanded my global network, strengthened my intercultural understanding, and enhanced my ability to design collaborative, inquiry-based STEM learning experiences. Seeing students connect across continents around shared ideas has been incredibly rewarding.
