Letting test-takers listen to a recording twice is a controversial topic in second language testing. On one hand, it can help make up for missing visuals or context. On the other, it’s not how we usually listen in real life – most of the time, we only have one opportunity to understand what’s said. Listening twice is shown to increase scores, making the test feel ‘easier’. But what does it actually do to test-taker behaviour? That’s the question this study set out to explore.
