About the project
In 2019, The Inclusion, Mobility and Multilingual Education (IMMLE) Conference brought together the 13th Language and Development Conference and the 6th Multilingual Education Conference co-hosted by British Council and UNESCO Bangkok on behalf of the Language and Development Conference Trustees and Asia-Pacific Multilingual Education Conference.
There were discussions and the exchanges of knowledge on the mentioned issues that should be highlighted. Therefore, it has been agreed that an online publication should be put together to showcase the work presented at the conference.
The online publication is commissioned in three parts;
part 1 – the overarching concept of the conference themes; written by the keynote and plenary speakers of the conference the conference delegates
part 2 – the highlighted academic papers; written by conference delegates
part 3 – the academic papers; written by Early Career Researchers.
About the role
The editor will lead the editorial work for the IMMLE Academic Conference Proceedings which aims to give overall perspectives on the languages and inclusion, mobility and multilingual education thematic areas as written by the keynote and plenary speakers from the conference (Part 1) and the highlighted topics and best practices shared during the conference, also related to the thematic areas, written by the conference delegates (Part 2). The publication will include up to five papers from Part 1 and ten papers from Part 2 (15 papers in total). The total contract is for 30 days between April and July 2020.
Key tasks
- Finalising the academic paper selection criteria for part 2 to ensure adequate coverage of each theme. (2 days)
- Reviewing submissions for part 2. Applying the selection criteria and providing feedback to the writers (1.5 days)
- Designing the structure and format of all selected papers (part 1 and 2) with writers to ensure that the content is well-presented, aligned to the conference theme and objectives of the project as well as our brand and copyright guidelines (to be provided by the British Council). This will include the development/adaptation of a style guide that is specific to the publication, for use by the writers. (10 days)
- Reviewing and revising the selected papers (part 1 and 2) to ensure they are consistent with the format and writing guideline and delivered in high standards (13 days)
- Being the first point of contact for the writers
- Delivering the full manuscript to the British Council in MS Word format or in other agreed formats at the end of the project
- Writing an introduction (1.5 days)
- Attending the online launch event (if any) (2 days)
If there is any change in the roles or some role is no longer applicable, the working days will be re-allocated or reduced. The final decision on working day allocation or reduction is to be agreed upon between the editor and the project team.
Qualifications and experience required
Essential
- Demonstrated experience being an editor for academic publications preferably in the field of language and development
- Demonstrated experience in academic writing and publication process
- Proven academic understanding of issues of language and inclusion, mobility, multilingual education and development
- Clear evidence of work requiring logistical ability and delivering to targets on time
- Ability to work remotely and independently yet effectively with individuals who live in different locations and time zones
- Excellent communication skills
Desirable
- Clear evidence of experience working with a range of partner organisations and individuals ranging from the academic, NGO, government sectors and including practitioners
- Previous experience of working with individuals from a range of language backgrounds
- Clear evidence of high level of intercultural competence enabling communication and joint working with people from a variety of linguistic, educational, socio-economic and cultural backgrounds
