We developed a comprehensive background report on the education sector in Indonesia as part of the Education Sector Analytical and Capacity Development Partnership framework. The purpose of this report was to produce an assessment that would play a central role in informing national education policy and implementation.
Scope and use
The report was sector-wide in scope, covering all education stages (from pre-school to higher education). It also addressed relevant cross-cutting issues and covered both public and privately provided education under the auspices of both the Ministry of Education and Culture (MoEC) and the Ministry of Religious Affairs (MoRA) for Islamic schools.
Expertise and collaboration
In the process of producing this report, we worked with the MoEC’s Research and Development Department, the Directorate General Islamic Education for MoRA, the Ministry of Planning and leading Indonesian universities.
Future work
This comprehensive report, which highlighted up-to-date information on a range of issues such as performance, challenges and key strategic issues, will be used as part of the Indonesia Education Sector Review to be undertaken by the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development. The report and review will, in turn, feed into the development of specific government strategic plans, such as the strategic plans (Renstra) of the MoEC and MoRA and the Government Medium Term Development Plan.

'The report is comprehensive and useful in feeding into Government’s current thinking on education reform strategy. We would like to circulate the final report to various government departments so that more people are aware of this report and can benefit from it.'
Dr. Ir. Taufik Hanafi, Advisor to Minister of Education Republic of Indonesia.
