Role overview
ABOUT THE PROJECT
Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya (KGBV) schools play an important role in narrowing the gender gap in educationally backward blocks across India. Launched in July 2004 and implemented in 27 states of the country, there are now a total of 2578 residential upper-primary schools providing education for girls from disadvantaged communities. In Uttar Pradesh there are 746 KGBVs with a total of 7460 girls enrolled.
The three-year partnership project aims to develop the KGBV teachers’ English proficiency and encourage them to use more learner-centred approaches in their classrooms, in order to develop learners’ exposure, active involvement and therefore learning of English.
A scoping study was conducted in December 2017 and 42 KGBV schools were visited across 19 districts in UP. The findings from this study identified specific training needs for KGBV English teachers in UP. We are therefore seeking the skills of a materials writer to create eleven 90 minute standalone sessions that include a participant workbook and trainer notes for each session.
About the trainer notes and participant workbook
The UP KGBV project follows a cascade model using British Council Training Consultants to train Master Trainers. The Master Trainers will train all the KGBV teachers. The Master Trainers will receive two blocks of six days' training and the KGBV teachers will receive two blocks of four days’ training. Each training session is ninety minutes and most of the sessions are going to be common for Master Trainers and teachers. The following sessions need to be created:
- the role of Master Trainers
- the role English language teachers in the classroom
- using a multilingual approach to assist teaching and learning
- co-delivering training
- introduction to learner-centred classroom
- introduction to reflection and action planning (for Master Trainers)
- introduction to reflection and action planning (for teachers)
- introduction to UP KGBV learning outcomes for English
- introduction to Continuous Professional Development (CPD) (for low resource contexts)
- assessing learning (two sessions).
ABOUT THE ROLE
The consultant will be required to create the sessions as noted above and:
1. ensure that the language level and themes for the teacher sessions are suitable for a low A2 level of English
2. ensure that the techniques and activities described in the trainer notes are realistic for teachers with A2 levels of English to follow, are described clearly and are viable in UP KGBV classrooms – additional guidance notes will be provided
3. create learning outcomes of each ninety-minute session, ensuring they are suitable for the Master Trainers to deliver and for the KGBV teachers to achieve
4. ensure that the sessions, where applicable and possible, include the UP state learning outcomes and textbooks for Classes 6-8 – additional guidance notes will be provided
5. ensure that the content reflects the British Council’s Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) approach.
