About the project
This study will aim to determine how the British Council is contributing to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through its global portfolio of activity. We hope that this will provide evidence of the British Council’s contribution to the achievement of a selection of the SDGs, demonstrate consistent strengths in our models and approaches and determine recommendations for shaping our future portfolio.
As a delivery agency, our ability to demonstrate impact is of critical importance. This study will provide evidence of the effectiveness of our activities and approach to sustainable development and act as a valuable response to and resource for key partners and stakeholders in government and civil society.

About the role
This study will aim to determine: how the British Council is contributing to the achievement of the SDGs through its global portfolio of activity.
In order to support the above aim, the detailed objectives of the study are:
• map a selection of determined SDG targets and indicators against a selection of current or recent British Council programmes
• draw links between any common models and/or approaches identified within the selected programmes (e.g. social action, empowerment of local organisations, working in partnership, cultural relations approach our work with poor, vulnerable and marginalised groups etc) that effectively support the aims of the SDGs
• reflect upon any consistent themes and examples of strengths and good practice in our delivery and summarise any potential gaps
• make recommendations for future programming
• make recommendations for how to incorporate the SDGs into our M&E processes and measure our contribution
The Consultants will be expected to lead the assignment, but to also work alongside British Council staff to develop the methodology and as required as the research develops.
It is expected that the outputs of this research would include:
• A baseline study to map the British Council’s contribution to the achievement of a selection of SDGs, targets and indicators
• Case studies to demonstrate consistent strengths in our models and approaches to supporting the SDGs
• Recommendations for future programming and processes
Qualifications and experience
• Strong qualitative and quantitative research portfolio, evidenced by previous projects
• Expertise in conducting interviews and identifying case studies – evidenced by previous research projects and consultancy
• Strong dedicated individual or team with suitable experience and qualifications
• Knowledge and expertise of the development sector and/or SDGs (desirable)
• Offering good value for money
• Capacity to deliver within the timeframes set out
