We work across the education sector in primary, secondary and tertiary (TVET, HE) and pre-service and in-service teacher education.

There are two main areas of work: English Language Teaching in Education and English in a Multilingual World.

English in a Multilingual World

Our work in bilingual or multilingual formal education systems focuses on where English is the language of teaching and learning for all or part of the education system.

As well as the choice of medium of instruction being instrumental – enabling learning and achievement – language links more broadly to notions of identity, belonging, values and aspirations. Students have the right to access the curriculum and assessment in a language that does not create an obstacle to learning or reduce their ability to demonstrate their knowledge and skills.

We use our experience and expertise in the medium of instruction, the transition from local to English medium education, and multilingual approaches to teaching to advocate for good language policy and for teachers to develop good practices in language teaching.

English Language Teaching in Education

When English is taught as a foreign language and often a core and compulsory subject, our work focuses on improving standards of the teaching, learning and assessment of English as a subject.

We aim to strengthen existing teacher development systems and build sustainably on them through the development of teacher educators, effective use of technology and integration of inclusive practices. We ensure that English as a subject teaching enables students to successfully develop the English language skills and knowledge that are relevant to their own contexts and futures.

Our aim is that all teachers have access to high-quality opportunities that improve their own practice and their learners’ success. Teaching for Success is the British Council evidence-based approach to teacher education and CPD. It aims to put in place effective and sustainable CPD systems that will have a long-term impact on the development of teachers.
