About the project
The Secondary Teachers English Language Improvement Rwanda (STELIR) project is delivered in collaboration with the Mastercard Foundation and implemented by British Council in partnership with Rwanda Basic Education Board (REB). STELIR aims to improve the English language proficiency of Lower Secondary Teachers in the Rwandan state education system to at least intermediate level, working with 6,000 in-service teachers across 14 districts, plus 1,000 Secondary pre-service teachers in training at the University of Rwanda College of Education (URCE), with the ultimate goal of improving learning opportunities for lower secondary pupils.
STELIR aims to achieve a sustainable change in the Rwandan education system by adapting training materials for the Rwanda Education Board (REB) for face-to-face intensive and online delivery and by developing a cadre of local English Teacher Trainers (both face to face trainers and e-Teacher/ Moderators) who can deliver ongoing training after the project has ended.
About the role
The Consultant English Teacher Trainer (CETT) will work alongside a Senior English Teacher Trainer (SETT) from within the Rwandan state education system, to oversee the delivery of a 10-day face-to-face intensive English Language teacher training programme, to improve the English language proficiency of lower secondary teachers in Rwanda.
The intensive training will take place over ten days and will be delivered in teacher training colleges around Rwanda. The CETT, together with the SETT, will ensure smooth-running and academic quality of delivery through mentoring and supporting the Rwandan English Teacher Trainers (ETTs).
Duties include:
- Attending a one-day induction in Kigali
- Delivering a two-day induction to ETTs
- Mentoring ETTs in the delivery of English language lessons to teachers
- Supporting ETTs during lesson preparation
- Carrying out observations and feedback for ETTs
- Collecting data for monitoring and evaluation of the programme, as directed by the STELIR Academic Manager
- Proactively liaising with STELIR project team to raise and resolve any arising issues during the training
- Liaising with and managing external stakeholders who visit the training venues
The Consultant English Teacher Trainers will be required to travel to Rwanda during the last week of July and work through to mid-August with exact dates TBC upon contracting. The CETT will be contracted for a maximum of 19 days, including travel to Rwanda (if required) and within Rwanda, inductions and training days.
Qualifications and experience required
- TEFL-Q: a diploma level qualification in teaching English as a foreign / second language which meets UK accreditation requirements OR an MA in ELT or Education or equivalent.
- Minimum 5 years’ experience of English language teaching and training
- Minimum 2 years’ experience of working on teacher development programmes in public education systems and working with a range of external and internal partners, e.g. Ministries of Education
- Minimum 2 years’ experience of managing and/ or mentoring teacher trainers
- Experience of working in Sub-Saharan Africa and/or other development contexts
- Experience of working remotely with minimal supervision
