About

The British Council and DAAD have co-funded this study, and worked with ANIE (African Network for Internationalisation of Education), and University College London, Institute of Education to investigate the nature of research and doctoral training across Sub-Saharan Africa.

This study supports decision making around national-level policy, and institutional-level practice and provides current and potential international partners with insight into the PhD environment in six countries across Sub-Saharan Africa (Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, Senegal, South Africa).

In addition to emphasising the need to increase the rate of PhD and doctoral production, the level of national investment, and quality of national data collection; the study raises other questions about concentration/diffusion of doctoral programmes across the sector, and the role of international collaboration.
