Role overview
ABOUT THE PROJECT
The British Council Jordan has developed the Design and Development Hub (DDH) in Jordan that will bring together its work on Language for Resilience. The project is intended to support community centres in delivering language training, as well as support in delivering the programme. It will also include a digital and materials development component.
This piece of research is intended to inform the English language side of the project through establishing a detailed description of the provision of English for displaced and marginalised groups in Jordan and establish links with the centres providing this service.
ABOUT THE ROLE
To conduct desk and field research into English Language provision at Community-Based Organisations (CBOs) and Non-Government Organisations (NGOs) to better understand the type of language provision which is offered in Jordan;
The requested services are as follows:
- Produce a map of the Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) / CBOs which offer English language provision of any kind in Jordan, with a description of the type and format of provision
- Conduct stakeholder consultations (interviews and focus groups sessions) at provincial level with UN agencies, NGOs and CSOs providing English language support. The British Council Jordan can support in providing introductions for the meetings, although it is expected that the researcher will be able to establish further connections based on discussions with agencies, NGOs and community centres in Jordan
- Compile quantitative data from language assessment placement testing in the LASER and HOPES projects. This data has already been collected by the British Council and needs to be compiled to create a comparative report.
- Create a survey for English language providers in Jordan which can allow for quantitative comparable data on language support for marginalised and displaced youth within Jordan, as well as qualitative data giving insight into service providers. This survey is to be administered, with data collated and analysed by the researcher.
- Build on an already established network of language providers for these youth groups in Jordan.
- Conduct focus groups, and or interviews, with community centres in order to understand from them the priorities, challenges and potential scope for improvement and greater cooperation in the provision of English language services for these youth groups.
- Map the provision of English language support in CSOs throughout Jordan, including details on numbers, levels, and type of provision offered.
- The research is to be presented as an internal and external report, of between 5000-6000 words.
