Anglo-German student fellowships
Linking schools in England and Germany

If you are a student at a school or college in England and interested in spending two weeks studying in a German school taking part in lessons and working on an individual research project, we’d like to hear from you.

Who can apply?

16 to 18 year-old pupils at schools and colleges in England
Pupils must be in school Year 12 or 13 at the time of their visit to Germany
Applications are particularly welcome from A-level/AS students of German

Applicants need to have a good level of German in order to communicate with teachers and peers, to observe lessons and to make use of some research materials in German

Please note that it is rarely possible to award more than two Fellowships to any one sponsoring school in England in any one year

Where can I go?
Successful applicants can carry out their project in a German school with which their own school already has a link. Please ensure the German link school has agreed to your proposed visit before you make an application to us (see below).

When can I go?
The timings of the individual study visits are flexible but must take place when the German host school is in full session.

How do I apply?
You can download and read the guidelines and then fill out the application form or if requested, we can also fax or email the forms to you.

If you intend to visit your German partner school, please confirm their agreement by ensuring that the host agreement form (Word document, 61 KB) is completed and signed by them and submitted with your application form.

The next deadline for applications is 9 October 2009, for visits to take place before 1 April 2010.

What are the project guidelines?
The topics of the research projects are of the students' own choice and should tie in with their studies. Interested students should consult with their teachers about project themes. Details of the project proposal need to be submitted as part of the application form.

Examples of research projects previously undertaken include:

Deutschland und Europa
The environment and attitudes of young people
Anglo-German stereotypes
Architecture in Germany today
Die weiße Rose

The following downloads give examples of successful projects that have already been undertaken through this scheme: case studies 1,(Word Document 114KB) case studies 2(PDF 635KB),case studies 3 (PDF 61KB) list of all projects 03-04(PDF 23KB) .

The projects are intended to be individual pieces of work and so students should not submit joint applications. Should students from the same school be awarded a fellowship to visit the same German partner school, they would be expected to stay in different host families and work on entirely different projects.

How much funding is available?
A grant is available towards travel, insurance and accommodation costs, with a contribution to subsistence and materials.

Preparation and reporting

A briefing meeting will be held for successful applicants prior to their visit overseas. Attendance at this meeting is obligatory for the students and their support teachers. If a Fellow has a unique visit date then individual briefing arrangements may be made for them. Following the Fellowship visit participants will submit their project report to the British Council. The project will contribute to an annual journal of outcomes. A celebration featuring the Fellowships and other programmes wich Germany is also held each year - date to be confirmed.
