Update on British Council work in Egypt
22 February 2011
The British Council has reopened its offices in Cairo and is beginning to resume its activities on the ground in Egypt.
Following the withdrawal of the majority of our UK staff at the start of February, the first group of senior UK staff members returned to Egypt on 19 February 2011.
While the situation in Egypt is beginning to return to normal, we are continuing to monitor developments closely and are following security advice from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and British Embassy in Cairo.
We hope that the remainder of our UK teaching staff will be able to return as soon as possible so that our English teaching work can resume.
The British Council has been working in Egypt since 1938 and it remains one of our largest and most active country programmes. We remain committed to working in Egypt and to providing projects that meet the needs and aspirations of the Egyptian people.
In Egypt our work is focussed on building mutual trust and understanding between Egypt and the UK, and on creating opportunities for young Egyptians through skills training, education, English language teaching and cultural exchange. This work is as important now as it ever has been, and we will continue to work to strengthen the services we offer young Egyptians.
Every year more than 20,000 people in Egypt learn English with the British Council; 40,000 take a UK qualification; and 200,000 access our free online English language resources. The demand for these services is great and growing and we will continue to develop our offering to meet the needs of more people across the country.
