Update on British Council operations in Japan

17 March 2011

Our thoughts are with our friends in Japan following the devastating earthquake and tsunami.

All British Council staff and their families in Japan are safe and well.

In light of the current situation, only a very small team is currently working in our Tokyo office. Some colleagues are working from home, others have decided to leave Tokyo temporarily.

We are currently offering to withdraw family members of our UK-appointed staff from Japan, along with any UK-appointed members of staff with young families. In addition, we are being flexible should any staff member who is concerned about remaining in the Tokyo area wish to travel elsewhere in Japan or overseas.

The safety of our staff and customers is our priority . We are monitoring the situation closely and are following advice from the Japanese government and the UK Foreign Office.

The British Council’s work in Japan builds links with the UK through English, Education and the Arts. Last year, we ran English courses for more than 12,000 learners, helped around 25,000 Japanese students study in the UK, and linked 80 schools in the UK and Japan.
