Description
French was used by pupils aged 12-14 together with their teachers to collaborate on the theme of festivals and traditions, such as: Christmas, New Year, St Andrew’s Day, Carnival, Red nose day and Easter.

Use of ICT
We used e-mail to correspond with each other and to plan our project, the Internet to research our themes, the digital camera to take photos and insert them into text or a PowerPoint presentation. We also recorded the pupils singing Christmas carols and attached the sound. We published our work on the twin space and the Greek and Italian students did likewise.

Results and Benefits
The pupils collaborated with each other as a team. Their work involved different stages, ranging from the initial brainstorming, to researching their ideas, organising and structuring them, writing up articles and illustrating them with suitable photos or even attaching sound.They learned a great deal not only about Greece and Italy but also about the customs of their own country and thought more deeply about the origin of their traditions and why we celebrate them at certain times of the year.

The project energised us and motivated my pupils. The pupils were using French for a real purpose, i.e. to communicate with people from other countries whose native language was not French. On the one hand, they felt more confident and were not so afraid to make mistakes, on the other hand they knew that they were competing with other young people on an equal footing and worked hard to rise to the occasion. There also was a real purpose now to use ICT and to produce good quality work for the website. They really enjoyed using the digital camera and producing sound recordings.
