Draw Me The Task

School name: Eastbourne Comprehensive School

Teacher name: Kiki Haines

Twinned with: Poland, Czech Republic and Norway

Project Description

Teacher Kiki Haines and her pupils (known as the Eastbourne 8!) began a Maths project called ‘Draw me the Task’. The project aim was to adopt a fun approach to teaching basic maths concepts to younger pupils.  In this project, students from each school created simple maths problems to send to their partner schools to solve.  Pupils used many different ICT tools such as Word, PowerPoint, Adobe Flash and Audacity to display their work which you can see on the project Twinspace

Results and Benefits

The pupil's ICT skills have been developed through peer learning.  For example, pupils at Eastbourne created a user guide to share with other pupils and teachers in the project to show how they used various ICT tools to create maths problems.  All pupils involved have taken pride in the work they produce, as they are aware it has a “real audience”.

The pupils are highly motivated to produce work to share with their partner classes while learning more about each partner country. Their ICT skills and Maths skills have developed greatly. The ICT skills of the teachers involved are also being kept up to date through participating in the project.   A good relationship has been formed between the lead teachers in the schools.

Overall Quality

Eastbourne Comprehensive School and partner schools entered the prestigious Annual European eTwinning Awards for excellence in eTwinning projects.  The project and schools involved were runners up in the Science and Maths category and the judging panel said ‘This project demonstrates how effective a simple approach to a topic can be. The children obviously learned a lot while having fun’.  All communication between the schools and pupils was conducted virtually using various ICT tools and the teachers involved only met personally at the Awards ceremony!

This project also won the Collaboration Category in the UK Northern Grid for Learning 2008 Education/ICT Awards and was awarded 3rd Place in Czech National eTwinning Awards 2008
