This project with a School in Garmany was aimed to develop our European dimension and to stimulate and extend children’s learning across the curriculum. The project encouraged children towards a more healthy life style and used FIFA World Cup 2006 as a key focus.
The children drew their favourite sports and used digital cameras and scanners to upload their work on to the twinspace with a short introduction of themselves. Children then used ICT to respond and send images from our local area and school. Next stage was to design an object or a poster to symbolise the partnership. Tollgate pupils have individually drawn posters and German pupils have built a football pitch by using recycled materials.. Both teachers have used the twinspace to document the activities with file archives.
Firstly, children became more confident in using other ICT tools to enhance and present their work. They have also developed an awareness in using the Internet safely. One of the greatest benefit to children and the school community was to understand the German culture and overcome some of the prejudice and stereotypical views. They were able to see that both schools had children from ethnic communities apart from English and German pupils. Teachers became more confident in involving partnerships with other countries. The school community became more interested to widen our partnership with other European countries and invited other schools to take part in etwinning partnerships.
Children also developed interest in learning languages and used key vocabulary in the class to say; hello, good morning, thank you, please and more. Finally, the motivation levels in learning and attendance has risen as the project was stimulating and exciting which challenged childrens’ assumptions about others.
“eTwinning lends purpose to the curriculum.” “A project which has improved the ethos of the whole school, in terms of raised motivation and attendance.” “A good project which has used a very topical theme to engage students through technology”
