In many countries, science is taught in a second language, often English. This is the case, for example, in bilingual streams in schools in Europe and further afield, in English-medium education in Africa and in multicultural schools in the UK, North America or Australia. Expertise in English-medium science education, however, is scarce. Practitioners normally approach English-medium science teaching from their own viewpoint. Teachers of science by means of English see it from the viewpoint of science education; English language teachers who introduce science content into their language lessons look at it from the viewpoint of second language development. Teaching subjects in a second language requires a specific pedagogy which supports learners in developing both subject-matter knowledge and the language skills which are the vehicle for acquiring that knowledge. This seminar aims to define an appropriate pedagogy for English-medium science in different contexts and how it should be reflected in teaching, materials design and teacher education. The seminar will bring together expertise in science and language in a variety of fields including: science education, science teaching in content and language integrated learning (CLIL), science teaching in minority education in the UK, in English-medium education in Africa, and in inter-school science projects. Topics include: - an overview of principal issues in science education
- an overview of principal issues in teaching subjects through English as a second language
- networking in English-medium science:
- web-based information sources
- integrating science teaching and language
- meeting the cognitive and language demands of English-medium science education
- materials design for English-medium science
- science across the world
- teacher education for English-medium science.
