WORKING IN EDUCATION

The Living Together education programme will develop links between ministries of education, education authorities, schools, teachers and students. It will encourage an exchange of best practice in the teaching and learning of citizenship-related subjects. The programme concentrates on two main areas of activity: the development of educational material and school links. Both these activities will be based on the two main themes at the heart of Living Together (new migrant communities and minority communities).

Development of School Materials
We have undertaken a consultation with stakeholders in the participating countries, and our partners in the UK, to enable us to develop new materials that support the teaching of citizenship and civic values across Europe. The materials comprise lesson plans and guidance notes for secondary school teachers and other leaders of young people. They support citizenship education for those aged 11-18.

Development of School Links
Our school linking programme enables an exchange of ideas, experiences and viewpoints between teachers and students. Participating schools collaborate on projects in the field of citizenship and community cohesion. The project provides networking and professional development opportunities for teachers and compelling learning experiences for students.

We are working with secondary schools in Europe that have been identified by local education authorities and ministries of education in the participating countries. During a seminar for teachers, these schools were linked in clusters to work together on collaborative projects linked to the curriculum. The projects will be based on themes and ideas from the Living Together education materials comprising five topics: migration; integration; tensions; whose values should dominate; and participation in public life. The schools have been putting together a project plan of joint activity. For example: pupils will exchange information on their perceptions of other countries; develop a joint school council; and work together to redefine school rules.
