What is the Erasmus scheme – and how can you help your school leavers stand out from the crowd by choosing a university that offers Erasmus? We explain all

What is Erasmus?

Erasmus enables higher education students to study or work in another university in one of 30 other countries in Europe, as part of their degree course. They don’t have to be studying languages; students from all subject areas can take part, with many universities running courses in English. All eligible students receive a grant from the EU to help towards the additional costs of travelling abroad.

Why take part?

Whether students go for three, six or 12 months, it will enhance their personal development, job opportunities, confidence and their enjoyment of life. Not only will they acquire a broader range of skills to offer a future employer, but they’ll have fun doing it.

Students will stand out in the job market – a great addition to their CV
They return more motivated, independent and confident
They get a grant and have their tuition fees waived (if they go for the full academic year)
It’s recognised as part of their degree
They will learn a range of life skills not taught in the lecture theatre
Students can access a wider range of subject areas than in the UK
They will improve their language skills
They will discover a different culture, gaining an international perspective and an international network of friends
It’s really good fun!

Which universities offer Erasmus?

All UK universities and many other UK institutions of higher or further education are involved with the Erasmus programme. The involvement varies from institution to institution but most offer the scheme in several subject areas. Not all courses can be combined with the Erasmus programme – this will depend on the structure of the courses at the institution. To avoid missing out, prospective students should make sure they choose a course and institution offering them the chance to take part in Erasmus.

Want to know more?

If your school leavers want to study or work in Europe, the best way to do this is through the Erasmus programme. Make sure they don’t miss out on what will surely be the most rewarding and exciting time of their university life.

Prospective students can consult the Erasmus UK Course Guide on our website www.britishcouncil.org/erasmus-students-apply, which has been designed to help them find information on UK institutions and courses that offer an Erasmus experience. They will also find it useful to look at the universities’ own websites and contact these institutions directly if they have further questions. Students would also find it helpful to watch our Erasmus documentary film, in which former Erasmus students talk about their experiences, and to read some of their stories on our case studies pages.
