UK - Middle East School Partnerships

The UK–Middle East School Partnerships programme aims to connect pupils internationally and enhance their perceptions of each other’s cultures and aspirations. The programme helps schools to find partners and engage in curriculum projects that can motivate pupils and staff alike.

The Gulf region is an ideal choice if you are interested in working with schools in other countries. English is a widely spoken language; indeed, several countries deliver the science and mathematics curriculums in both Arabic and English, which allows great potential for collaboration in these areas. In the UK, Arabic is being taught in more schools than ever before, while the Islamic faith and Muslim community are important elements of British society.

Which countries are participating?

The programme applies to the four UK countries, plus Bahrain, Iraq, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates and Yemen. Each partnership consists of three schools: one in the UK and two in the Middle East.

How are the partnerships formed?

The British Council is running a series of contact seminars across the Gulf region which bring together schools from the UK and the other participating countries. Schools apply to take part in a contact seminar by filling in an application form. Successful schools are then invited to a contact seminar based on the strength of their application. Assessors look for a number of criteria, including a commitment to building a sustainable project lasting at least three years, a strong focus on educational goals, and engagement with the wider  school community.

How much funding is available?

Successful schools receive funding for a return flight enabling a teacher to attend a contact seminar in the Middle East. We will also cover accommodation and subsistence for the three-day event.  Partnerships created at the seminar can then receive funding for a joint curriculum project of up to £1,200 per annum per partnership. Funding can contribute to ongoing project costs, including travel and subsistence, communications and dissemination costs, information materials and project resources. Large items of hardware, supply or staffing costs and travel for leisure activities are not covered by  the grant.

What do I do next?

If you are a UK middle or secondary school in the state or private sector, delivering a recognised UK curriculum and working with pupils between the ages of 11 and 14, you can download guidance notes and an application form at  middle east school partnership website
