Universities are key players in knowledge economies across the world. They research and drive forward the frontiers of knowledge, they educate and develop global citizens and the workers of the future. In doing this, universities are themselves increasingly operating in global, as well as national, arenas. Institutional approaches to this are determined both by national strategies and institutional missions. To operate in the global arena, however, universities must build strong partnerships and alliances globally.

Case studies from universities across East Asia and the UK showed diverse missions and aspirations in exploring how research, curriculum development, teaching, student experience and staff development are integrated as components of international strategy. Specially commissioned research on how national governments are looking at the internationalisation of universities and how this impacts at the institutional level was also presented.
Following this dialogue, a post-conference project has been comissioned to further examine the issues discussed, particularly concentrating on internationalising the curriculum. The findings of this project will be made available in the near future.
