Partnership Start-up Scheme
China Start-up Partnership Opportunities

The Principal Shadowing Programme is taking place in 2013 in order to facilitate international cooperation and long term partnerships between UK and Chinese colleges. Watch this video from the May 2013 visit for information about key areas of collaboration, which may inform your partnership proposals.

The UK-China partnership has greatly enhanced our teachers’ ability to conduct research and teach classes and our students’ ability to learn and develop skills. It has also helped advance vocational education reform in Guangdong and China, which will produce a modern vocational education system that matches international standards."
Wei Zhonglin, Deputy Director General, Guangdong Department of Education, China

UK organisations are invited to identify appropriate partnership opportunities that meet the national skills priorities of China and have mutual benefit. You can find out more about the priorities from this presentation and from the China Market Intelligence Reports.

Start-up Partnership Project Proposals
If you already have a relationship with a Chinese institution and have identified priorities for partnership through both hosting an inward visit and attending an outward visit, (for example through the Principals' Shadowing Programme), please work with your partner to jointly develop your partnership project proposal and complete the Project Proposal form here. Please refer to the Start-up Proposal Guidelines.
Exploratory Travel Grants

If you have received a one-way visit from China and have identified and discussed a focus for partnership with your Chinese potential partners, but feel a return visit will be necessary to gain necessary understanding and finalise ideas, you can apply for an Exploratory Travel Grant of up to £3K. The application form can be downloaded here. Please note: this is different from the travel grant application form for Foundation Partnerships as it requires more information about your intended partnership.

Applications for exploratory grants are particularly welcome from UK institutions that have been involved in the British Council-organised Vocational Education Leadership Training (VELT) programme.

Timetable for applications

Exploratory Travel Grant applications will be assessed at the end of each month. Start-up Partnership Project Proposals will be assessed in two separate rounds:

  • Round One: 1 July - 30 September 2013
  • Round Two: 1 October - 30 December 2013

Please note that this is a competitive process: partnership project proposals are assessed by an expert panel including British Council skills experts, sector representatives and representatives from China. Proposals will be assessed both on how well the proposal meets the objectives set out above, and on how well it compares with other partnership project proposals received in the same round.

If you have any queries about partnerships, please contact Miranda Swanson in the first instance, who can refer you to the relevant team member in China: miranda.swanson@britishcouncil.org.
