Progression Routes

Progression to higher education is quite difficult as no formal mechanism exists for this.

School subjects that a student might have completed are not recognised in the NC(V) and Nated systems, even if they are directly related.

Generally, if a learner has achieved a Matric pass in school, they will progress to the N4 level. If a learner has not achieved a Matric pass, they generally progress to NC(V).

Once a student has completed Nated level 6 (N6) they can progress to studying towards a diploma at a University of Technology, where they may or may not get recognition for the course credits already earned. A Nated learner has the option of converting the N6 (final year) qualification into a diploma at their FET college by completing 18 months of theory and 18 months of practical in the form of a job placement. This is done through the use of an evidence logbook which the employer has to sign, and which the student has to present in order to achieve a diploma.
