Iraq

Iraq has one of the oldest Vocational Education and Training (VET) systems in the region. The infrastructure of this vital sector has been badly hit by the consecutive wars and internal instability of the country.

Nowadays, Iraq is trying to regain its place as one of the VET pioneers in the region. There is a lot of work going on in this sector both by the government of Iraq and a number of international organisations. Iraq is trying to continue its road towards reconstruction and rebuilding its economy and its infrastructure, this means that there is a great need for qualified national staff that has technical and vocational qualifications.

Qualifications and accrediation

There are no specialist organisations that create occupational standards. However, some unions and associations – such as the Physicians’ Union and the Engineers’ Union - provide accreditation for people within specific careers.
There is no organisation that specialises in accrediting degrees obtained within the Iraqi education system.

Quality Assurance

Quality assurance is a new concept for the VET sector in Iraq. In 2005, a new ‘Quality Research Unit’ was created as part of the Administration of the Technical College in Baghdad.

This unit aims to:
Develop scientific research in the fields of administration, accounting, economics and statistics
Conduct training workshops to develop quality assurance applications for industrial public service organisations.
