Research co-operation funding is designed to grow sustainable research networks and PMI2 funds have directly funded the mobility aspects of partnerships formed.
Currently, there are no research funding opportunities planned under PMI2; however, there are a number of other British Council-facilitated funding programmes available that you might be interested in.
To date, we have funded 107 research co-operation projects: 84 research projects between higher education institutions in the UK and Asia, ten specfically in Pakistan and 13 in the Gulf States. The full lists are available here
Funded partnerships span a range of disciplines and research in such areas as the optimal aeroelastic tailoring of wind turbines, a partnership between University of Glasgow and Korean advanced institute of Science and Technology, to testing models that predict the distribution and ecological requirements of threatened bat species in Thailand, a partnership between University of Bristol and Prince of Songkla University. The funding specifically enables travel to meet and work together. Professor Fran Lloyd from Kingston University has commented about her project with Kyoto Seika University called The Art of Intervention:
'We have used the grant to enable researchers to move between Kyoto and London so they can work more closely, have time to develop their thinking, and then come back together again, disseminating the research in progress through events such as this one. This sort of collaboration wouldn’t have been possible without the PMI2 grant. This has enabled us to travel and have in depth contact, which is very important for artistic collaboration. It can’t be done in any other way.'
Through a number of 'Sustainable Research Networks Workshops', we are supporting professors, post-doctorates and PhD researchers in their thinking of how to make the research partnerships sustainable beyond the PMI2 funding. In 2009, we will be hosting these workshops in South East Asia and the UK.
