What is Workshadow Exchange?

The Fulbright UK/US Administrator Workshadow programme for Headteachers, Senior Leadership Team and local authority personnel is currently suspended while new models of partnership between UK and US schools at senior leadership and local authority level are being developed.  More information will be available on the website in August/September 08.

Workshadow Exchange
The British Council, in collaboration with the United States Department of State, offers an opportunity for headteachers, principals, their deputies and other senior managers in the education service, covering all levels from nursery to further education, to exchange with colleagues in similar positions in the USA. This programme forms part of the Fulbright UK/US teacher exchange programme.

The Exchange
Participants spend approximately six weeks living and working with their American partners for whom they, in turn, provide a varied UK based programme. Ideally, reciprocal homestay accommodation should be provided. This helps to limit the costs while enhancing the professional value of the time spent overseas and also ensures that a rich cultural dimension is part of the experience. UK participants receive a grant from the UK education departments towards the return travel costs at economy rates to the US host community.

On completion of the exchange, participants are required to complete a report (2500 words minimum). This will be made available to the relevant UK Departments of Education and should indicate reflection on the professional experience, outcomes and any proposals for the development of future links between the UK and US institutions.

Application Deadline
The deadline for applications is 10th December for exchanges commencing the following year. You should start the application process as early as possible as you should obtain approval from your governors and where relevant your LEA/LA/ELB before it is submitted to the British Council.

Once the completed application form has been received and acknowledged, the applicant will next hear from the British Council when an appropriate match can be proposed. This will most likely be in early April.
