Selection Process

Once all application forms have been received and references obtained, we will inform you whether you will be invited to take part in the selection procedure and initial selection meetings held in Belfast, Ediburgh or London.

Several criteria are considered in the selection process, but the most important factor is that you must be able to fulfil the professional requirements of the host school.

British Council work with partners in the US to match the UK and US teachers. If selected and matched with a US partner, British Council will make you a formal exchange proposal. If the exchange is accepted and confirmed, teachers leave the UK to attend Orientation in the US in the first week of August prior to commencing their exchange placement.

Pre departure preparation briefings are delivered by British Council, including organising visa interviews for participating teachers at the US Embassy in London or US Consulate General in Belfast. All visa costs are covered by the programme administration.
