The Fulbright UK/US Teacher Exchange Programme was designed in 1924 to enhance mutual understanding, strengthen relations and provide a mutual opportunity for professional and personal development for both UK and US teachers. There are great benefits for both you and your school:
All teachers are encouraged to use a structured journal to support them in planning, thinking and reflecting on their exchange. The journal and other materials gathered during the exchange can then be used to create a portfolio for submission. This portfolio counts for a third of a Master's Degree. The accreditation model has been developed by Sheffield Hallam University in conjunction with the British Council and the US State Department. For further information please contact Sean Cavan, Head of CPD at Sheffield Hallam University.
A teacher exchange completely immerses you in the life of the school and the country, and so provides you with a real opportunity to find out about contemporary American culture.
Many participants have found a teacher exchange has helped them towards to future promotion. The experience can also provide first hand information for future study.
Exposure to different teaching methodologies and approaches can enrich your teaching practice and expand your vision.
You and your school will benefit when you return with increased motivation, refreshed enthusiasm and energy for teaching.
The incoming teacher can bring a fresh and different outlook into the school, and assist in the school's international activities. You yourself will be a direct contact in America; you and your exchange partner can bring American resources, materials and culture into your school.
There is enormous potential for broadening pupils' perspectives on the wider world. An exchange can provide a means of developing links at class or whole school level, with the possibility of involving a range of colleagues in a wider linking project.
