English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)

Level: Twelve grades span four stages -Initial, Elementary, Intermediate and Advanced. These examinations range from basic conversation at Initial stage to the Advanced stage, where use of language is required at a proficiency approaching that of the mother tongue.

Skills tested: Oral communication, both in the understanding and speaking of English.

Availability: Available to non-native speakers through registered centres in the UK and overseas. Examination dates are by arrangement between Trinity and the individual testing centres.

Trinity now also provides examinations in Integrated Skills in English (ISE). These examinations assess all four language skills - speaking, writing, listening and reading. ISE is available at three key levels. They are linked to the Council of Europe’s Common European Framework for language teaching and to the UK National Qualifications Framework. They are also linked to Trinity’s graded examinations, available at grades 6, 8 and 11 in Trinity’s spoken grades progression and geared towards a minimum age of 12, 14 and 16 respectively. Both ESOL and ISE examinations are formally accredited in by the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA) in England and by the corresponding authorities in Wales and Northern Ireland.
