The London Tests of English were originally developed by the University of London Schools Examination board in 1982. The examination board merged with Business & Technology Education Council (BTEC) in 1996 to become Edexcel, one of the largest examining bodies of academic and vocational in the UK. Edexcel is today part of the Pearson Group and delivers the London Tests of English through Pearson Language Assessments.
London Tests of English are scenario based English language assessments for speakers of other languages. They are designed to allow students the freedom to express themselves, to show what they can do and how well they can use English in a real life situations. There are six levels:
Level A1 Foundation (Council of Europe Level A1) Level 1 Elementary (Council of Europe Level A2) Level 2 Intermediate (Council of Europe Level B1) Level 3 Upper Intermediate (Council of Europe Level B2) Level 4 Advanced (Council of Europe Level C1) Level 5 Proficient (Council of Europe Level C2)
Skills tested: All four skills are tested and the tests consist of two papers. One tests listening and reading comprehension, and writing skills. The other is an oral test of candidates' speaking ability.
Availability: Available through approved examination centres in May, June, August and December. There are also opportunities for on-demand tests, subject to candidate numbers.
London Tests of English for Children are designed to be interesting and fun for young learners. There are four levels and the tests aim to make a child's first experience of learning English as a foreign language memorable and motivating.
