Meet our presenters

Presenters at the eTwinning professional development workshop in Edinburgh on February 23rd-25th 2006.

 Anne Gilleran

Anne Gilleran

Anne has many years experience in education as a guidance counsellor, teacher, school principal and teacher trainer. A specialist in Information Communication Technology in Education both at in practice and research, she is currently the Pedagogical Manager for eTwinning Central Support Service, run by the European Schoolnet in Brussels and a member of the Pedagogical Advisory Group for eTwinning.

She has also coordinated the School Manager Centre, a web portal for school managers in Europe, and is project manager of the European School Leaders Network (ESLN). Anne has also coordinated EUN’s Virtual School and the European Network of Innovative Schools (ENIS) networks.

Anne has carried out or been involved in a number of educational research and development programmes in European Schoolnet (EUN) surrounding emerging issues in education in Europe such as eWatch, VALNET and OASIS, which have brought her into direct contact with over 400 schools across Europe. She has represented the European School Heads Association (ESHA) on an expert’s panel for the European Commission in the area of ICT in Education.

Anne Jakins

For the past 10 years Anne has been the SENCO at Sackville School, East Grinstead responsible for a large, fully inclusive department catering for SEN students with a full range of special needs. Last year her department was featured on Teachers TV covering the modified curriculum at KS4, working with LSAs and teaching students with complex needs.

In 2000 Anne was invited by the Technology Schools Trust to visit schools in Atlanta, Georgia to observe good practice in ICT and SEN. More recently she has been a member of the Special Needs Department of the EUN Virtual School sharing ideas with international colleagues on issues such as bullying.

For the last year she has been involved in an ICT SEN e-twinning partnership with a school in Porvoo, Finland. A range of ICT tools has been used to enhance cultural awareness, target self-esteem and enhance study skills in order to contribute to a joint internet newspaper. Our Bear Exchange Project was featured in the international section of the TES last year. A very successful e-twinning workshop was held at Sackville in June 05 to inspire local colleagues.

 Baldev Singh

Dr Baldev Singh

Baldev was most recently Head of IT and teacher of science at John Cabot City Technology College (11-18 secondary school) in Bristol and is the recipient of 2004 National Teaching Award for Innovation in Education. He has taught Science (Biology, Physics and Chemistry), ICT and Citizenship, while also taking responsibility for the development of a program in key skills (such as lifelong learning, communication and numeracy) for students aged 16 to 19.

Baldev has developed a number of websites to support classroom learning for the British Council as part of the Montage collaborative project. He is also involved in the delivery of E-twinning which focuses on the use of ICT to develop an international dimension in schools. He has developed an online course which combines the UK Citizenship curriculum with systematic progression in ICT skills, contributed to the development of case studies for the DfES on how to integrate ICT effectively into subject teaching, and currently works with software companies to evaluate the effectiveness of their e-learning products.

 Brigitte Parry

Brigitte Parry

Brigitte Parry is an English teacher with more than 17 years of experience in teaching at secondary, adult and higher educational levels. She joined the EUN Office when it was established in 1998.

Brigitte’s main area of expertise is the pedagogical integration of ICT to teaching within the framework of European school collaboration. She is school networking manager at European Schoolnet and has successfully coordinated the Spring Day in Europe event and its pedagogical team of 30 teachers since its start in 2003.

Brigitte is also editor-in-chief of the European Schoolnet teacher newsletter, which is published and posted by email every three weeks in 13 languages, is estimated to reach at least 30,000 schools and aims at informing and linking up schools from all European countries.

 Conor Galvin

Conor Galvin

Conor Galvin is a Lecturer and Researcher at UCD Dublin School of Lifelong Learning where he contributes to various education, ICT and research methods programmes.

His teaching interests include active learning at second level and education technology. His research interests centre around schools ICT and the impact of new and emergent technology on learning and society, teachers’ professional knowledge, and innovation transfer in an information society.

Dr Galvin holds the President’s Award for Teaching Excellence at UCD Dublin and is currently lead education evaluator of the Diageo Liberties Learning Initiative, Ireland and a member of the team leading the National Pilot Project on Teacher Induction (Secondary). He has worked on eTwinning since the early stages of the project.

 Emile Vassallo

Emile Vassallo

Emile has experience in teaching ICT and English at secondary level and in pre-service and in-service teacher training. For the past 6 years, he has been directly involved in assisting the design and implementation of ICT in Education policy and initiatives on a national level in Malta within the Department of Technology in Education of the Education Division. During the same period, he has also gained experience in the design and delivery of teacher training in the field of ICT in Education.

For the past year, he has been coordinator of the eTwinning National Support Service in Malta. His duties include the promotion of the action, the contribution to its administration at the European level through close collaboration with other National Support Services and the European Commission, and amongst other functions, the design and provision of teacher training – exploring the pedagogical as well as the technical aspects of school collaboration.

He has organised several courses to date, targeting teachers who are interested in this action and equipping them with the skills required, both technical and pedagogical. Topics covered are related to innovative technologies such as video and audio conferencing, digital photography and digital video editing, amongst others, and their application to the school curriculum, both in a mono-curricular as well as in a cross curricular perspective.

 Ewan McIntosh

Ewan McIntosh

As a teacher at Musselburgh Grammar School Ewan was involved in creating over 20 links with schools abroad, many of which were in Europe. At the time eTwinning was just beginning but, together with project partners in Poland, Ewan made a retrospective entry in the eTwinning register.

As a result of the prolific exchanges using weblogs and podcasts, Musselburgh Grammar School won a European Award for Languages in 2005. Ewan took part in the European conference in Krakow, Poland, where he was able to share and gain expertise from a wide variety of partners across the EU.

Ewan is now responsible for the delivery of the Modern Foreign Languages Environment, which offers, amongst other things, opportunities for schools to learn new ways to create links abroad. He has been invited to speak at various international conferences on the use of new technologies to create and maintain links between education and business organizations.

 George Glass

George Glass

George is the Head Teacher of Cauldeen Primary School in Inverness, Scotland. His school caters for two hundred and fifty children with a broad range of abilities and backgrounds from the local community and beyond.

George has been involved in eTwinning since the launch in Brussels in January 2005 and he firmly believes that this concept has enormous potential to enrich and enhance all aspects of the broad curriculum as well as motivate pupils at his school.

Last session his school initiated a project ‘Talking through Time’ which involved pupils digitally archiving the memoirs of local veterans. The contribution of their partner school in Malta added an exciting and unique dimension to the project. The project was awarded the European eTwinning ‘School Collaboration’ Award in January 06.

This session the school has extended its involvement and the pupils are participating in four eTwinning partnerships across Europe in many areas of the curriculum. These involve ‘Virtual Visits’ focusing on local and European studies, ‘Chocolate & Chips’ a health and lifestyle project between the Infant class and a Nursery class in Malta. They are exchanging ‘Cultural Events’ electronically with two schools in Poland and are presently discussing possible projects with teachers in Italy and Belgium.

 Nicholas Falk

Nicholas Falk

Nicholas combines the role of ICT Co-ordinator and Chemistry teacher at Sackville School in the UK. His first collaborative European venture was as a member of the planning team of the EUN Virtual School. This European Schoolnet Project encouraged collaboration between European schools and the teachers.

He has done more focussed collaborative work as the UK administrator for a multi-lingual chemistry project funded by the EU and an industrial partner. Molecool is an on-line chemistry game which allows students from different countries to compete against each other in their own language. http://www.molekult.no

He continues to work with a colleague on an SEN/ICT eTwinning project between the UK and Finland. The project was featured in a recent TES Global Citizenship supplement. In addition a science project with an Italian school is utilising multimedia and web based communication applications to encourage students to reflect on their own and others learning experiences.

 Nuria De Salvador

Nuria De Salvador

Nuria de Salvador is one of the members of the eTwinning Central Support Service (CSS) Helpdesk. She has worked for European Schoolnet since September 2004. She has 15 years of experience as a secondary foreign language teacher and teacher trainer in Barcelona, Spain.

She holds a degree in English (Universidad de Barcelona) and a Masters in Applied  Linguistics and Foreign Language Teaching from Universidad Autonoma de Barcelona. She was national Pedagogical Advisor  for Spring Day in Europe in 2003 and 2004 in Spain.

 Richard Shotton

Richard Shotton

After over ten years of teaching MFL in UK schools (most recently as Head of International Studies at John Cabot College in Bristol), Richard set up the Imagine Education consultancy partnership in 2004 to support worldwide ICT-based initiatives aimed at enhancing teaching and learning and international collaboration in the classroom.

He has been senior advisory teacher to the British Council's online Montage World project, helping teachers in Europe and more recently the Middle East to set up productive partnerships, and has also developed sample classroom projects for the UK DfES Global Gateway web portal.
