Eligibility Criteria for International Category

1. Eligiblity

The International awards are open to individuals or teams working for or conducting research in the field of English language teaching at educational institutions or companies based outside the UK and not affiliated to a UK-based ELT organisation, i.e.

educational institutions which are not UK-based or UK-branded, e.g. Further Education and Higher Education institutions, independent schools and private language schools located outside the UK
individuals, companies and other organisations who provide innovative ELT products/services/research including publishing companies or examination boards located outside of the UK who are not UK-based or UK-branded.
overseas affiliates of UK-based or UK-branded organisations or institutions are not eligible for the International Awards

2. Eligible subject areas

Products and services in the following areas are eligible:

ELT research – completed projects reported on through, for example, articles in journals, newsletters or magazines, dissertations and theses, and book-length studies or edited collections
ELT materials: e.g. coursebooks, supplementary materials; resource books for teachers.
ELT products and services: e.g. English language courses, examinations.

Please note that resources and courses for English language teacher training/development are eligible for the awards. However candidates will be required to demonstrate that any product entered is of direct benefit to learners of English.

Please note that products for submission must be complete (i.e. not in draft or pre-publication format)

3. Number of entries

The British Council will accept no more than two entries from any one institution or company.

4. Undecided eligibility

In the case where the eligibility of an individual, organisation or company is unclear, the ELTons Committee will decide on its eligibility. Their decision will be final. The organisation or company may be asked to produce a rationale explaining how it meets the criteria stated above.

5. Date of Innovation

Eligible products, services or research must have been published or completed no earlier than 1 January 2006.
