Title: Meeting the challenges of teaching and learning English in contemporary societies
Venue: Sorocaba (Sao Paulo State), Brazil

Learning points: The topic of the school was meeting the challenges of teaching and learning English in contemporary societies. This provided scope for several strands including:
- access to resources, including ICT;
- integrating language and content;
- changes in the English language;
- local policies and global needs;
- post-method approaches.

Learning points: Using Real World Material in the ELT Classroom focused on the following objectives:
- To help English language teachers in East Asia identify aspects  of real world material that is accessible to them, which is relevant and interesting to language learners in their own educational contexts.
- To enhance the capacity of English language teachers in East Asia to use such material more efficiently in developing language lessons.
- To increase the opportunity for English language teachers in East Asia to share resources and expertise and build a sustainable network that is personally and professionally beneficial to all.

Learning points: The British Council-Hornby Seminars in English Language Teaching (ELT) are the British Council’s flagship programmes in ELT, designed to make a difference in the way English is taught in classrooms in the Indian context. The seminars, held across all the four regions in North, East, West and South India, are 6-day workshops. They are led by an experienced teacher-trainer, usually from the UK, and supported by a local resource person.

Nepal: January 2007

Title: Facing the Reality of Primary School English Language Classes in Developing Countries
Venue: The British Council, Kathmandu, Nepal

Learning points: The objectives were
- Matching theory with classroom reality.
- Teaching classes of up to 100 pupils
- Teaching classes with mixed ages and levels
- Teaching in environments with little or no technology and very limited facilities.
- Levels of English of English teachers and on-going strategies to improve these.
- Building confidence of English teachers.
- Setting up a regional support network for teacher trainers

Follow up project: A core group of Nepali teacher trainers who attended the school have started a very active programme of training around the country, using the network they established during the course. British Council Nepal are planning to do a follow up Hornby school in 2008.
