Brazil: 8-18 January 2006

Title: Hornby Summer School English as a Global Language: implications for innovation in teaching and learning
Venue: Sorocaba (Sao Paulo State), Brazil

Learning points: Feedback on this 10 day event for ELT professionals throughout the region offering an opportunity to network and build stronger ties across Brazil, Latin America and the Caribbean for the development in English Language Teaching.

Follow up: This Hornby Summer School looked at the ways in which English is being used in the world today and examined the implications that this has for teachers and learners in schools, colleges and universities.

Philippines: 27 February-10 March 2006

Title: Mentor Training for English Language Teachers workshop
Venue: SEAMEO INNOTECH, Commonwealth Avenue, Quezon City, Philippines

Learning points: Mentor training for English Language Teachers aims to build a core group of mentors in the region to help in developing the capabilities of teachers to improve their English language skills and competence.
The objectives of this training are:
•To enable the initial development of informed, skilful and creative teachers
•To support teachers (and those who support them) in continuing development and making changes required of them by policy changes in contextually appropriate ways

Follow up: By the end of the school, participants prepared mentoring plans to coach 10 co-teachers within one year and developed an on-line forum which will also monitor and evaluate the effectivity of the mentoring plan that will help participants think of follow-up training.

Uganda: 9-10 March 2006

Title: Hornby Workshop on Using Literature Resources in the English Language Classroom

Follow up: The Ugandan delegates formed a national association of teachers of English with coordinators from the different regions of the country. Those who attended the workshop are now spearheading the formation of teachers’ associations at district levels.

Follow up: In response to demand, four two-day cascade programmes were planned using two of the participants, one in each of the regions.  The cascades targeted teachers planning to move into teacher training.  The cascades also helped to develop the training skills of the presenters.

Morocco: 10-19 July 2006

Title: Hornby Seminar on training of trainers and use of web-based materials

Learning points: As part of the British Council’s programme of regional projects in the Near East and North Africa region, a series of teacher training workshops were developed by a team from Lebanon, Morocco, Syria and Tunisia.  From January 2006 all participating countries delivered Teacher Training workshops in their respective countries in Phase 2 of the Project cycle.  As Phase 3, this workshop prepared and equipped trainees to deliver workshops for other teachers in more remote areas of Lebanon, Morocco, Syria and Tunisia.

Follow up: Phase 4 will be the cascaded delivery of TT w/shops throughout each of the countries in the region.  In Morocco this will be through co-ordination with and by MATE (the Moroccan Association of Moroccan Teachers of English).
In summer 2007 a second Hornby Summer School event will take place elsewhere in the region, possibly Lebanon, to focus either on NENA ELT materials review or Cascade Trainer feedback and presentations.

Serbia & Montenegro: 6 to 20 August 2006

Title: Hornby summer school on Young Learners: Creative classroom and creative assessment
Venue: Palic, Serbia & Montenegro

Learning points: The aim of the project is to develop the skills of assessing young learners and exchange best practices amongst the participants and tutors.

Follow up: Participants plan to try out project work in cooperation with Hornby School colleagues and to include children’s parents.  They plan to implement more pair and group work activities learned during the summer school.  Participants from Serbia will deliver 3 workshops at the British Council and a seminar, and after that will deliver the same in their own regions.  The participants also want to engage in an NLP Course in 2007.

Ethiopia: 28 August - 2 September 2006

Title: Hornby residential school on Teaching English in Large Classes
